Streaming Ratings: No Originals Make Overall Top 10 for First Time Ever

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.

No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.

House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

(Nielsen also adjusted viewing totals for HotD down slighlty for the weeks of July 1-7 and July 8-14 due to what it called a “crediting issue.” Totals for those weeks have been updated.)

Bluey (1.17 billion minutes) was the only other title to cross the billion-minute mark for the week. Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (553 million minutes) was the biggest newcomer among original series. Futurama (320 million) returned to the rankings with the premiere of a new season on Hulu.

Two mid-aughts staples also made their chart debuts after joining Netflix: Prison Break (758 million minutes) and Lost (678 million) ranked in the top 10 acquired shows (both also stream on Hulu).

Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. The ratings only measure U.S. audiences, not those in other countries. The top streaming titles for July 29-Aug. 4, 2024, are below.
