Democratic National Convention host Ana Navarro slammed Ann Coulter for mocking Gus Walz, the 17-year-old son of Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz.
At the DNC‘s third night in Chicago, Gus went viral for his emotional reaction to his father praising him, his sister Hope and mother Gwen. During his speech onstage accepting the nomination for vice president, Walz looked at his family and said, “Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world and I love you.”
When the camera cut to them, tears were flooding down the kids’ faces. Gus was so moved, he stood up and shouted repeatedly, “That’s my dad!” The moment quickly went viral as people began learning for the first time that the teenager has ADHD, a nonverbal learning disorder and an anxiety disorder.
Coulter later took to social media to mock Gus’ emotional reaction and tweeted in a now-deleted post, “Talk about weird.” Navarro shared a screenshot of the post with a caption, writing, “Jesus. What ass-wipes. Of course Republicans and Trumpers on social media taking shots at Gus Walz. You have to be a special kind of heart-less mutant to attack a 17 year-old special needs kid -not involved in politics- for the simple act of expressing love for his father.”
She explained that Gus is neurodivergent, pointing out that children who struggle with disorders may have trouble regulating their emotions in a social setting. “I don’t and won’t attack Barron Trump. As far as I’m concerned, he’s out-of-bounds,” The View host concluded. “They need to leave Gus Walz the fuck alone.”
When people pointed out the post is no longer on Coulter’s X (formerly Twitter) account, the conservative commentator said she took the post down “as soon as someone told me he’s autistic, but it’s Democrats who go around calling everyone weird thinking it’s hilariously funny.”
Later on Thursday, Michelle Obama also joined the discussion, when she wrote on social media she was “touched to see Gus Walz’s joy when his dad took the stage last night,” and added: “Thankful for you showing us all what real love looks like, Gus.”
“Let’s be a nation that embraces this kind of warmth and vulnerability, instead of making fun or mocking it,” Obama concluded. “We could all use some of Gus’s example in our own lives.”
