Expect Lil Nas X to bring the noise when the MTV Video Music Awards take place on Aug. 28. The “Industry Baby” rapper – who is not afraid to speak his mind when getting overlooked by other awards shows – joins Jack Harlow and Kendrick Lamar to lead the list of 2022 nominees. The nominations, unveiled today (July 26), see Jack and Nas X up for Video of the Year, while both will compete for Artist of the Year. Kendrick will actually compete against himself for Best Cinematography (“family ties,” “N95”). His “The Heart Part 5” is also up for Video For Good and Best Visual Effects.

Doja Cat and Harry Styles both picked up 6 nominations, while Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd scored 5 each. This year’s nominations see 26 first-time nominees, with Baby Keem, Gayle, Måneskin, Kacey Musgraves, Tems, Wet Leg, Karol G, Dove Cameron, Becky G, and more all picking up nominations. Meanwhile, Madonna becomes the only artist to be nominated in each of the VMAs’ five decades, as she earned her 69th nomination (nice) for “MADAME X.”

The 2022 VMAs take place at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. This year’s ceremony, broadcasting at 8 pm ET/PT, will be simulcast on The CW, along with BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TVLand, and VH1.

Fans can now vote for their favorites across 22 gender-neutral categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and two all-new categories — Best Longform Video and Best Metaverse Performance — by visiting vote.mtv.com until Friday, August 19, 2022. Voting for Best New Artist, presented by EXTRA® Gum, will remain active into the show on Sunday, August, 28, 2022. Nominations for social categories including Group of the Year and Song of Summer will be announced at a later date.
