With autumn just around the corner, I’m already searching for the staple items to add to next season’s outfit rotations. My style is more classic and anti-trend, so I often turn to shoes with elevated elements to add interest to my outfits, be it a statement clasp or a chic square toe—something subtle that sets that shoe apart from the rest. Handily, I find that shoe trends stick around for a lot longer than clothing ones do, making them a great way for me channel the latest looks and make my outfits feel more current for longer, without compromising on my overarching fashion sense.
As someone who also likes to put comfort first, flat shoes are my year round go-to. So usually, whenever I’m in need of a fresh shoe, I scroll through my favourite brands without even considering the heels on offer. However, this autumn, I have my eye on one particular heeled shoe trend that is just as comfy as the flats in my wardrobe and that seems to be winning fashion people over left, right and centre.
Although heeled loafers have been around for years, I think it’s fair to say the focus has been on flats for a while. This, however, changed earlier this year during Fashion Month, where attendees of various autumn/winter 2024/25 shows in Paris and Milan were spotted wearing this literal elevated take on the classic loafer. There’s something about the added height that makes the loafer look even more sophisticated than it already does, and those in the know proved this by pairing the style with everything from Bermuda shorts and a tailored shirt, to a mini skirt and long coat.
And unlike uncomfortable thinner heels that leave my feet aching at the end of the day, the much thicker and generally lower heel on this style of loafer adds structure to the shoe, ensuring I’ll be able to wear them comfortably all day. Some even come with platform soles, which only makes them sturdy, and also adds a chic ’70s edge that we’ve been seeing everywhere for 2024. Just ask Daisy Edgar-Jones who put platform pairs firmly back on our radar last week.
Heeled loafers also incredibly easy to dress up or down for both casual and more formal occasions. I’ll be styling them with my tailored trousers and button-up shirt combos for days out in London. However, I’m equally excited to pair them with a relaxed blazer dress and sheer stockings for nights out.
Fortunately for us all, both high street and luxury brands have created their own versions of this chic style. From heritage brands like Gucci, which is known for its classic horsebit loafers to H&M, my high-street go-to for expensive-looking shoes, there are plenty of heeled loafers to choose from this autumn.
