Olivia Rodrigo handed out free condoms and morning-after pills at her St. Louis GUTS world tour stop, while a portion of her tour’s total ticket sales will go to abortion funds across the country through her new initiative Fund 4 Good.
Through her fund, which she launched in collaboration with the tour, the Grammy-winning artist will partner up with local chapters of the National Network of Abortion Funds. Together, they will work to “ensure those most impacted by systemic racism, misogyny, and healthcare barriers can get the reproductive care they deserve,” according to its page on the Entertainment Industry Foundation website.
At her St. Louis stop on Tuesday, Rodrigo worked with the Missouri Abortion Fund to pass out Julie morning-after pills. The brand launched in September 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade and was built to change the conversation around emergency contraception, expanding access to communities that need it the most.
Julie shared a statement following the concert, writing, “We launched Julie to rewrite the morning-after experience for a new generation. Replacing the stigma and shame often associated with emergency contraception with access, exploration and education is core to who we are, and we’re thankful for artists like Olivia Rodrigo and initiatives like the Missouri Abortion Fund who share our mission.”
In a social media post, a fan who attended the St. Louis tour stop shared a photo of two emergency contraceptive pill boxes. On top of them was a purple, square sticker that read, “Funding abortions? It’s a good idea, right?” seemingly a reference to Rodrigo’s song, “bad idea right?”
In addition to providing contraceptives at her shows, the singer-songwriter also has National Network of Abortion Funds tables set up at each tour location.
“Supporting abortion funds has never been more critical, in an era where abortion access is under relentless attack,” Oriaku Njoku, National Network of Abortion Funds executive director, told USA TODAY when the Fund 4 Good launched. “We are excited to be in partnership with Olivia Rodrigo, as she’s uplifting the critical work of abortion funds, and leading (her fans) into the movement towards reproductive freedom!”
This isn’t the first time Rodrigo has been outspoken about women’s rights.
During her performance at Glastonbury Festival in June 2022, the day after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the Grammy winner and Lily Allen dedicated the latter’s song, “Fuck You,” to the Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn it.
“I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this,” Rodrigo said at the time. “I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a shit about freedom.”
She added, “This song goes out to the justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you.”
